This article relates to the ecdotic concept of the archetype and explores its application to the ordination of Petrarch’s songbook form. After a reflection on the concept of archetype, some particularly significant moments of a historically structured path become the main focus. In this context, Luigi Marsili’s comment, the first Cancioneiro prints and the 1501 aldina, as well as Francesco Vellutello’s commentary are considered. The impact of the re-discovery of the Vat. Lat. 3195 manuscript in the Vatican Library in 1886, the codex in which Francesco Petrarch worked in the last years of his life, is then presented. Taking into account more recent research on how the ordination of the Cancioneiro would be conceived by the poet, new conclusions are presented regarding the application of the archetype concept to the Petrarchian songbook form.pt
