In recent decades, atmospheric particles have been the subject of several studies, being considered as one of the main pollutants with harmful effects on health. Particulate matter can be emitted through natural and anthropogenic sources, which influences properties such as chemical composition and particle size. The impacts on health vary depending on the characteristics of the particles and the concentration of particles present in the atmosphere. The main objective of this work is to characterize atmospheric particles, in terms of size distribution, mass and numerical concentration, in an urban environment, directly influenced by road traffic. In order to achieve this goal, an experimental campaign to measure atmospheric particles was implemented during a week in May 2019, using a portable aerosol spectrometer, GRIMM. In order to characterize particulate matter in an urban environment, a measurement site was selected, with direct influence of road traffic, within an area classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Additionally, an information survey was carried out in the same location, on one of the campaign days, to characterize the temporal variation and composition of road traffic in order to help understand the data obtained with the measurement. The data acquired with the portable aerosol spectrometer allowed to obtain the number (particle/l), mass (µg/m3) and surface area (mm2/L) size distribution, in the range between 0,25 – 32 µm, as well as the mass concentration of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. The obtained data allowed to perform a temporal analysis and a statistical analysis and were compared with values measured at the air quality monitoring stations of Coimbra. With the data acquired in the campaign, it was found that the distribution by size is multimodal. It was concluded that the numerical concentration is mainly influenced by particles with smaller diameters, which do not have a great impact on mass concentration, which is mainly influenced by particles of larger diameter. It was possible to conclude that, although the measurement location is directly influenced by road traffic, the meteorological conditions have a greater impact on the variation of atmospheric particle concentration. It was also concluded that, the limit value established in the current legislation for PM10 and the recommended value by WHO for PM2.5, were not exceeded during the measurement campaign.
