Respiratory diseases are considered one of the main causes of death, causing health, social and economic problems worldwide. In this sense, several methods to improve diagnosis, monitoring and prognostic of patients with these diseases have been investigated. The computational analysis of respiratory sounds is one of the ways to detect respiratory pathologies. This dissertation aims to evaluate the ability to classify adventitious sounds in children, carrying out a feature engineering study using the most used features in the state of the art, and also to compare this classification to that obtained for the adult population. The adopted methodology consisted of separating the children's population database by age and using 42 features along with 4 machine learning algorithms to classify wheezes, crackles and normal sounds. The selection of features was carried out using 3 different algorithms in order to evaluate the performance of features. The combination of the most relevant features and the optimization of SVM parameters allowed to obtain an average f-measure of 0.794; 0.891; 0.850; 0.882; 0.933; 0.842 for samples 0-2 years, 3-6 years, all sounds of children, only crackles (children), only wheezes (children) and adults, respectively. In sum, the results were very promising, proving the great potential of these features for the classification of adventitious sounds in children. It was also demonstrated that the separation by age in the child population is significant and improves the results of the classification. As future work, it is proposed to test the classification in a larger database and extend it to other adventitious sounds, as well as to investigate the infuence of the place of acquisition of the respiratory sound and investigate the differences in the select features for the child and adult population. |
