The main objective of this research was to evaluate and optimize the energy performance of a company in the sanitary ceramics sector, providing an increase in its efficiency and thus achieving economic savings.Continuous furnaces are one of the equipment with the highest consumption and waste of thermal energy, and therefore the focus of this study was to find solutions for the reuse of waste heat (air currents used for coolant and exhaust gases) refused by this equipment. Several hypotheses have been analyzed from the integration of the kiln itself to the integration in other processes with thermal needs (pottery). For this purpose, three possible ways, of increasing the company’s energy efficiency, were studied:1 – Using the cooling currents as combustion air in the kilns themselves, as well as the implementation of air/air exchangers to harness the potential of the exhaust gases, creating various combinations (scenarios) for each furnace. It was concluded that by applying the best possible scenario to each of the ovens, the company achieves annual savings of 465,57 k€/year by investing 267.12 €k.2 – Residual heat currents are integrated into the pottery operation scheme with maximum savings of 95,78 k€/year were obtained, with an implementation cost of 31,56 k€3 – The currents were reorganized in order to implement the best possible scenario for each kiln and to allow the simultaneous implementation of the pottery, earning a total of 337,07 k€/year, with an investment of 151,90 k€/year.By comparing the three options, the application of the scenarios to the kilns is naturally the most advantageous, compared to the 2nd and 3rd alternatives, with an investment of 8,5 and 1,8 times higher respectively, but with a return of 4,9 and 1,4 times greater. Having said that, it is up to the company to assess its economic possibilities/interests in order to be able to select the best of the possible alternatives.eng
