Bread has been the essential nourishment for human beings for thousands of years. There is strong evidence that it arose during the Neolithic period, being the main compound food resulting from planting and harvesting. The emergence and growing of cereals in the Western world occurred in the territories of the Middle East, Northern Africa, Fertile Crescent, Mesopotamia, the Nile Valley and Egypt, where agriculture developed, allowing for the settlement of people in these regions. This was the territory that the Jewish people went through in a pendular movement mobility that lasted millennia. All through the whole of the Pentateuch\Torah the word bread appears in several contexts, there being plenty of evidence of the growing of cereals and bread making. Firstly, the kind of cereal used motivated this study, from the analysis of the most holy texts and founders of the Jewish culture, the Pentateuch/the Torah. Then, the moments, places and writing contexts in which wheat, rye, oat and barley appeared in these territories, and their corresponding bread making, took us to the analysis of the symbolic centrality of bread in the community and religious life experiences.Several senses, meanings and descriptions are assigned to the word “bread” in the Scriptures. The meaning of bread emerges as a metonymic reference for “nourishment” as well as for the bread of substitution – the manna. The senses, sensations and metaphors are also presented in different narrative moments as in Eden, through its absence. In the account of the Jewish People daily life, bread also emerges as a trade, being the “fruit of the earth and work of human hands”. The religious calendar was defined according to the growing of cereal, to which this people too added the wine. Bread is also presented here as a synonym for hospitality and pleasure. There are several descriptive references according to which this is a specialized product, intended for offering (the oblation) in the most diverse typologies.eng
