Introduction: In 2011 the diagnostic criteria for gestational Diabetes (GD) was changed leading to a considerable increase in its prevalence. Despite the benefits of glycemic control, the diagnosis of GD may have a negative maternal psychological impact (depression, anxiety or stress), and the evaluation of this effect is the main objective of the present study. Methods: Cohort, analytical and retrospective study. The sample included pregnant women who had consultations at Bissaya Barreto Maternity and who answered a questionnaire consisting of: a sociodemographic evaluation; direct questions about their gestation(s), existence of GD, diabetes mellitus, depression, anxiety, stress and other diseases prior to pregnancy and their treatment; postpartum depression screening scale (PDSS-24), perinatal anxiety screening scale (PASS) and perceived stress scale (SPS10). A descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was performed to compare the groups with and without GD in relation to the levels of depression, anxiety or stress in pregnancy. Subgroup analyses were performed to eliminate possible confounding variables. Results: The sample included 106 pregnant women with GD and 257 without GD. Despite the adjustment of the confounding variables identified (complications in pregnancy, low socioeconomic level, low income, previous depression and previous anxiety/stress), there was no relation between having GD and risk of depression (p=0,783), higher anxiety (p=0,679) or higher perceived stress (p=0783) in the overall or subgroup analysis.Discussion and conclusion: The non-relation between the variables under study may be justified by the small sample and insufficient representation of some subgroups or by the use of self-filling scales to assess the risk of the three psychological disorders.eng
