Mental health presents itself as a state of well-being, in which the individual has the capacity to deal with everyday issues, contributing to society in its formation, developing and realizing its potential (WHO, 2005). Epidemiological studies indicate that about 5% of the active population has a serious mental health problem and that more than 15% is affected by a common mental disorder, and it is suggested that one in two people will have a mental illness in life, negatively affecting employment prospects, productivity and wages (Almeida et al., 2013).Pathological entities in the field of mental health may be referred to as mental or psychiatric disorders or diseases, and those with greater severity imply a significant impairment in daily, relational and / or professional activities (Almeida, 2018). Mental health care for the adult population with more severe psychiatric disorders requires a more regular follow-up, involving responses in multidisciplinary teams that include different levels of action, including psychosocial rehabilitation, which involves responses in health sectors as well as social action. According to the legislation in force, the responses can be classified into integrated mental health care units and teams that include: (a) Residential Units; (b) Occupational Partner Units; and (c) Domiciliary Support Teams, which in turn are articulated with local mental health services and the National Network of Continuing Integrated Care (NNCIC) (Decree-Law no. 8/2010). In this scope of response, still with an emergent character, some of these structures fit in their professional teams that act through the psychomotricity. Fonseca (2001a), a reference author in Portugal, states that Psychomotricity helps the individual to adapt and respond to various situations, presupposing stimulation in the behavioral, cognitive, symbolic, motor, affective, social and psycholinguistic domains, associating the thought with action, the emotions with the symbols, and the gesture with the word, through the elaboration and psychic control of intelligent movements (Fonseca, 2001a). With respect to the competency profile of the professional of this area, the psychomotricist, it is considered that this is a specialist in the field of body-oriented intervention and movement, aiming to improve the psychosocial functioning and mental health in babies, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. The psychomotricist performs his intervention in the field of prevention, education, rehabilitation and psychomotor therapy. Thus the present study seeks to clarify the effect of psychomotor therapy in adults with mental disturbance through a synthesis of research. Three databases (ISI Web Knowledge, Science Direct and Pubmed) were searched for articles published between January 2009 and April 2019 in the English language with the keywords "Psychomotor Therapy" + "Adults" + "Mental Health Disorders "+" Psychiatric Disorders ". The selection of the articles was done by two specialists, selecting a total of 22 articles according to the inclusion criteria (involving a psychomotor intervention according to EFP (2019a). The level of evidence for psychomotor intervention, according to the Joanna Briggs Institute classification model (Joanna Briggs Institute, 2013), is, in two articles level 1, in nine level 2, in two level 3, in two level 4 and at a level 5. The quality assessment of studies, conducted using the PEDRo (Physiotherapy Evidence Database, 1999) scale for randomized control studies indicates that two present a final score of 9 values, one with 7 values and three with 6 values.Although the evidence found in the selected articles indicates possible benefits in what concerns interventions in the field of psychomotricity, studies are still scarce. Therefore, it is important to carry out future studies in this area, particularly those involving experimental RCT (randomized controlled trial) methodologies.
