dc.description.abstract | Background: ASK-12 is a measure, validated in English, able to assess barriers to medication adherence and adherence-related behaviors. Objective: To undergo translation and cultural adaptation of ASK-12 to European Portuguese, as well as, its application and concurrent and simultaneous validation with MMAS-4.Methods: Initially we underwent a translation, cognitive debriefing and retro-translation process to European Portuguese. Later, patients, with hypertension in need of medication control, were recruited in 4 primary care units in the central region of Portugal. The data acquisition occurred prior to medical consultation and included application of ASK-12 and MMAS-4, retrieving context information (gender, age, literacy), a question about patient perception of having its hypertension under control and the registry of the last 2 blood pressure values. Descriptive and inferential statistics, after checking the normality of the data, was performed. Results: A total of 121 patients participated (51.2% female; 67.8% with or over 65 years). ASK-12 presented a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.725 and its subscales (Forgetfulness/Inconvenience, Health Beliefs and Adherence-Related Behaviors) attained between 0.557 to 0.761, showing a good internal consistency. Its convergent validity was demonstrated by a strong correlation with MMAS-4 (ρ -0.523; p<0.001) and the arterial hypertension control evaluated by patient blood pressure values (ρ 0.363; p=0.001).Conclusions: ASK-12 proved to be a reliable scale to measure therapeutic non-adherence in Portuguese patients suffering from arterial hypertension. It was also confirmed the presence of a strong correlation between this scale and the control of hypertension values. | eng |
