Abstract: Originating in the research done on one of the oldest obituaries produced in the city of Coimbra, the goal of this essay is to detail the founding of the medieval ceremonies surrounding suffrages in the urban parish of São Bartolomeu. In analysing the parish’s ceremonies, a fuller understanding of the experience of life and death will be reached, namely of the religious experience of both clergy and laypeople in death. Differences and similarities between the two will be detected, while noting the sharing and transfer of knowledge of the liturgy and its practices.
