Análise de mercado da doença de Alzheimer: presente e futuro

Abstract

A Doença de Alzheimer (DA) é uma doença neurodegenerativa que leva à perda de memória e de funções cognitivas. Os doentes com DA sofrem um rápido declínio do seu estado, o que resulta numa redução drástica de qualidade de vida, tanto dos doentes como dos responsáveis pelos seus cuidados. Com o envelhecimento da população, espera-se que o número de doentes que sofre de DA aumente no futuro, o que, consequentemente, motivou a identificação da doença como uma enorme ameaça à saúde global pela comunidade médica internacional. O mercado farmacêutico da DA é composto, exclusivamente, por quatro tratamentos sintomáticos que conferem pequenas melhorias cognitivas e funcionais, sendo impossível manter a longo prazo o benefício destes medicamentos. A ausência de novos concorrentes no mercado permitiu que os fabricantes destes quatro fármacos retivessem fortes vendas ao longo do seu tempo de vida. A Pfizer, a Novartis, a Actavis Pharmaceuticals e a Janssen Pharmaceuticals da Johnson & Johnson têm partilhado a totalidade das vendas neste espaço de tempo, no entanto, estes medicamentos já perderam a proteção por patente ou estão prestes a perdê-la. Atualmente, as necessidades da DA ainda não foram correspondidas, o que abre uma grande janela de oportunidades para as empresas farmacêuticas que desenvolvem novos tratamentos direcionados. Os esforços investidos em Investigação e Desenvolvimento (I&D) têm-se focado no desenvolvimento de fármacos com novos mecanismos de ação que podem diminuir ou alterar a progressão da doença. Espera-se que os fármacos mais promissores em pipeline para a DA possam ser lançados a partir do ano de 2017. O objetivo desta monografia é efetuar uma análise de mercado dos atuais tratamentos, fornecendo também uma visão global e detalhada dos fármacos mais promissores em pipeline para a DA.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease of the brain which leads to loss of memory and cognitive functions. The rapidly declining status of patients with Alzheimer’s disease results in a drastic reduction in quality of life, both for the patients and their caretakers. With ageing world population, the number of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease is expected to increase in the future, consequently Alzheimer’s disease has been identified as a major global health threat by the international medical community. The pharmaceutical market for Alzheimer’s disease is composed exclusively of four symptomatic therapies that confer small improvements in cognition and function, but the benefit from these medications cannot be maintained long term. The absence of new market competition has allowed the manufacturers of these four agents to retain strong sales throughout their lifespans. Pfizer, Novartis, Actavis Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceuticals have shared the entirety of drug sales in this space, but these medications have either lost patent protection or their patent expiries are impending. The current unmet needs represent a huge opportunity for pharmaceutical companies which are developing targeted novel therapies. Research & development efforts are focused on developing drugs with novel mechanisms that slow or halt the progression of the disease. The most promising pipeline drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's have expected launch from the year 2017 onwards. The aim of this report is making a market analysis of the current treatments and providing a detailed overview of the most promising pipeline drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's.
