Density estimation is a highly studied subject in nonparametric statistics. In this dissertation, we will use the kernel estimator, which depends on the kernel, K, and bandwidth h, for the estimation of a density function f, however, since the choice of the bandwidth is more relevant than the choice of the kernel K, we will develop this choice throughout the dissertation. Under certain conditions, we will prove the existence of an optimal bandwidth consisting of the minimizer of the mean integrated square error, MISE, of the density kernel estimator and analyze its asymptotic behavior. In order to obtain asymptotic expressions for the optimal bandwidth, we will obtain asymptotic developments for the MISE and for the first and second order derivatives. By the asymptotic expressions for the optimal bandwidth, we find that we have parameters dependent on f, so unknown. Thus, through the Hermite orthogonal system estimation we will be able to estimate these parameters, through two possible estimators. Taking into account the obtained estimators we will analyze their convergences and, finally, as these estimators depend on a new parameter m, we will proceed to the automatic selection of this value, and then we will proceed to the comparative simulation study between the bandwidth obtained by us through of the Hermite orthogonal system estimation with the classic bandwidth obtained by direct two-step plug-in methods and cross-validation taking into account f as a mixture of normal densities. |
