| pt |
dc.description.abstract | The increasing incidence of painful conditions in society prompts the need to develop strategies to combat pain, in order to ensure the quality of life of patients. Currently, chronic pain has been proving to be a scourge on populations and often lacks proper treatment. The transdermal systems have shown to be successful on analgesic active ingredients delivery, because of the advantages offered and research is ongoing to find increasingly effective and safe ways to administer drugs through the transdermal route. This monograph explores the features in technology currently available in transdermal systems in the Portuguese market, the methods used to increase the permeability of drugs through the skin, and the application of these patches in the treatment of chronic pain, especially in hospital environment. The major patches with opioid drugs available in Portugal to treat moderate to severe chronic pain are analyzed and some future prospects in this field are explored. | pt |
