The purpose of this study is to evaluate and understand the self-concept and the relationship between parents / children in subjects with mental deficiency and also the association between these variables. To examine these aspects, we used a sample of 135 subjects of various charities. Data was collected by the portuguese adaptation of the Questionário sobre as relações pais/filhos de Bastin e Delrez (1976) done by Vaz Serra in 1985, from Inventário Clínico de Auto-conceito built by Vaz Serra and a Socio-demographic questionary. The results have been probably influenced by mental deficiency. Thus, it was found that there were a few significant inverse correlations, presenting low and moderate magnitude, between some factors on the association between the parents / children relations and self-concept. These associations are often unexpected in normal subjects. In addition, it was also found that age and sex did not influence the relationship between parents / children and self-concept. These results open the way to allow us to understand this problem and consequent intervention with both subjects with mental deficiency and their families. |
