dc.description.abstract | The electrical energy consumption has been increasing globally, year by year, due to continuous world population growth, the current technological development in developed countries and the evolution of developing countries. Considering that this trend shows no signs of slowing down, the investment and development of alternatives to fossil fuel consumption relating to energy production is an obligation. Production of energy from renewable sources is the way in order to achieve energy sustainability. The operation of isolated systems with high penetration of renewable energies, although it is a step towards energy sustainability, brings increased problems in the management of the balance between production and demand for energy, due to inconstant generation and lack of response to load variations. The introduction of energy storage systems in the electric system, to help the integration of renewable energies in the production of electricity, is the solution analyzed in this dissertation, using the electrical systems of the islands of Graciosa and Porto Santo as a starting point. With the use of Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (Homer Energy Pro) software, developed entirely for the desing and techno-economic analysis of small-sized hybrid systems, the sizing and analysis of the systems mentioned above, the assessment of the impact of the introduction of storage systems and the ability of them to operate fully from renewable energy sources nowadays are presented. | eng |
