Silica aerogels are materials with attractive properties, which make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, they possess a poor mechanical behavior which can hinder their practical use. In this way, mechanical reinforcement strategies are being developed, but the atomistic details on how they are employed are still lacking. In this work, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation approach is used in order to study, for the first time, the aggregation between silica-based species when influenced by different polymers and solvents, in any case, systems with potential interest from the application point of view. Firstly, reference systems composed by a silica-based precursor and a solvent were simulated to be used as a basis for comparison. Tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS), a mixture of TMOS and VTMS in a 50/50 molar ratio (assigned as TMVT), and a functionalization of TMOS with the aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) precursor in a 50/50 molar ratio (assigned as TMAP) were selected as the silica-based species, whereas methanol, ethanol, N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one (NMP) were the chosen solvents. Then, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was included in the system at different concentrations relative to the silica content (10 or 50% molar) sourced by TMOS, VTMS or TMVT, using methanol as solvent. Finally, the TMAP-based species were also simulated with different polyimides, viz. BO and PD, resulting from the imidization of the polyamic acid obtained, respectively, from the reaction of 3,3’,4,4’-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride with oxydianiline, and from the reaction of pyromellitic dianhydride and diamino benzoic acid, as well as their polyamic acid counterparts, here labeled as BOAA and PDAA, respectively. The analysis of MD results were based on several metrics. The aggregation process was evaluated by calculating the cluster distribution, at the beginning and at the end of the simulation and by detailing the composition of the largest cluster. The probable causes behind the aggregation trends were further assessed by calculating the hydrogen bond formation both between silica-based species and between them and the polymer, the intermolecular interactions (van der Waals and Coulomb), and the radial distribution functions (RDF) between silica-based and polymer functional groups. The results show a good particle aggregation in the PDMS containing systems, being closer to the reference case in the systems with lower PDMS content (10%), where the formation of large clusters is observed. On the other hand, the polyimide-based systems show an almost negligible particle clustering due to silica-solvent interactions. The extent of aggregation in systems containing PDMS was found to be related to the extent of hydrogen bonding between silica particles and the polymer, while van der Waals forces between methyl and vinyl groups also play a major role in VTMS and TMVT-based systems. Van der Waals interactions are also determinant for the adhesion of polyimide/polyamic acid molecules to the TMAP-based silica oligomers, although possible opportunities for chemical bonding of both phases have also been identified, which can arise due to the existance of hydrogen bonds between amine groups of the silica-based species and anhydride/carboxyl groups of the polymer chains. It is believed that this study will contribute to rationalize and understand, on a fundamental basis, some of the actual attributes of the title materials that are still being investigated experimentally.eng
