Abstract: The model of dissertation presented is based on the transformation of a training project, and consequent integration in a sports training core along the season 2015/2016, in scientific report developed in the specialty of children and youth sports training. Purpose: Establish the long-term athlete development model to be adopted by the Vibratenis School and define the general planning organization for the corresponding stages of formation. Also, it is aimed to develop a study to define the anthropometric and biological maturation profile of the young male tennis players of local-level representing the tennis school in the under-14, under-16 and under-18 groups. Finally, we investigated the incidence rate and severity of sports injuries and established an appropriate preventive training program. Methods: The sample included 14 youth male tennis players (14.97±1.99 years), from a local club of the midlands of Portugal: under-14 [U14 (n=4)], under-16 [U16 (n=4)] and under-18 [U18 (n=6)]. Anthropometrics (body mass, stature, sitting height and sum of skinfolds), maturation (maturity offset and percentage of predicted mature height) and parameters of training experience and training volume where considered. The following functional capacities were evaluated: 5-m speed, 10-m speed (anaerobic fitness), counter movement jump (power of the lower limbs), 2-kg ball throw (power of the upper limbs), 60-s sit-ups (abdominal resistance strength) and spider agility test (agility). Data analysis considered descriptive statistics and the Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA to test age groups associated variation. The level of significance was maintained at 5%. Results: Multiple comparisons analysis between different age subgroups of the sample indicates that the U18 athletes have significant differences (U18 > U16 & U14) for the variables of somatic maturation, notably for the maturity offset (χ2 = 8.936; p = 0.011) and percentage of predicted mature stature (χ2 = 8.967; p = 0.011). U16 and U14’s do not show statistically significant differences between themselves, regarding the same indicators. Statistically significant differences were also noted for body mass (χ2 = 5.974; p = 0.049) between the older and the younger group (S18 > S14). Finally, there were also statistically significant differences for all functional capacities with advantage for the U18 players compared to U16 and U14 (U18 > U16 & S14; p < 0.049).Conclusions: U18 tennis players distinguish themselves from their U16 and U14 peers in growth and maturation. The trend extends to functional capacities; despite the fact that the general fitness level of the total sample is low. Additionally, there are no differences in sports preparation parameters between different age groups. In short, it seems clear the need for training programmes adjusted to individual rates of maturation and to different windows of trainability of the functional capacities that contribute the most to performance in tennis.
