This master´s thesis was integrated with a curricular internship in the Thermal Power Station of Pego, which produces electric power through the burning of coal. The primary goal of this study is to analyse alternatives to the valuation of the coal fly ash (CV) which the industry produces.Due to the enormous amounts of coal fly ash that are produced, the management of this waste is a problem for this type of industries. Despite the valuation of this material by some industries (such as in the production of cement), not all of the waste can be used by them. As such, a significant amount of CV is still being dumped into landfills, which bring about a host of environmental problems due to their physical and chemical properties. The results of physical and chemical characterization showed some differences between the various samples taken, namely in terms of humidity, carbon, free CaO and gradation. Such differences reduce the number of industries that could potentially use this coal fly ash. The leachates produced by CV were also characterize and some elements presented higher concentrations than what is legally permitted in Portugal in landfills for non-dangerous substances.Additionally, the possibility of using the coal fly ash as a drying agent for the sewage sludge (LA) was studied in these proportions, 0:100, 5:95; 10:90 e 15:85. This study involved several temperatures (40, 70, 100 e 130 ºC) to better understand the influence of these factors in the diffusion. Despite the variation of temperature generating the greatest benefit for the drying, it was also observed that samples with higher amounts of incorporated coal fly ash had a more efficient drying process than control test. Finally, both the germination index in extracts obtained in different liquid to solid ratio, for CV, LA and mixture 15:85 in order to assess the impact of leachate in germination process. In cases where the liquid to solid ratio was lower than 5 L/kg, it was observed that the CV did not affect the natural development of Lepidium Sativum L. (GI≈ 80 %)., demonstrating the non-toxic nature of these residues. In turn, the sewage sludge led to a severe degree of inhibition (GI <40 %) in cases where the liquid to solid ratio was lower than 100 L/kg.In conclusion, this study alerts to impact on the environment and to the care that is necessary when managing industrial residues, namely LA by low GI’s. It is important that more such valuation studies be done so as to discover alternative ways to deal with these residues and thus reduce their impact on the environment.
