Imagologia e Transnacionalismo: heteroimagens e autoimagens em Myra de Maria Velho da Costa e Livro de José Luís Peixoto

Abstract

A sociedade atual caracteriza-se por uma grande facilidade de mudança e por uma intensa movência das pessoas, originando essa "liquidez" de que nos fala Zygmunt Bauman e a multiculturalidade que tanto hoje se estuda. Neste contexto, a Imagologia literária apresenta-se como um domínio de estudos fértil e útil para o entendimento dos choques e dos intercâmbios culturais e a Literatura revela ser um campo muito especial para se compreenderem os fenómenos interculturais, particiando simultaneamente como agente e recetor dessa fluidez e dessa movência. À luz destas ideias, neste estudo, pretende-se analisar os romances Myra de Maria Velho da Costa e Livro de josé Luís Peixoto, abordando o modo como as personagens representam imigrantes e emigrantes cujas construções identitárias são multímodas, ambivalentes e transnacionais. O jogo entretecido pelas diversas personagens, a complexidade das suas situações e o entrecruzamento dos espaços em que elas se movem revelam como estas ficções plasmam as mudanças sociais e se configuram como signos da contemporaneidade, tornando-se, assim, importantes para se intelegir melhor "the transnacional turn" que marca hoje as discussões dos estudos culturais e literários.

Modern-day society is characterized by the fact that change and the displacement of people occur with great ease. These phenomena give rise to the "liquidity" that Zygmunt Bauman speaks of and to multiculturalism that is such a prevalent object of study today. In this context, literary imagology is a fertile and useful field of inquiry for an understanding of the relevant cultural shocks and exchanges, and the literature on this topic is paramount for any understanding of intercultural phenomena, participating as both agent and receiver of this fluidity and this capacity for displacement. In this context, we propose to analyze the novels Myra by Maria Velho da Costa and Livro by José Luís Peixoto, focusing on the way the characters come to represent immigrants and emigrants whose identity constructions are multimodal, ambivalent, and transnational. The game played by several characters, the complexity of their situations, and the overlapping of the spaces through which they move demonstrate the way in which these fictions reflect social changes and can be read as signs of contemporaneity. In this respect, they become very important for a better understanding of "the transnational turn" that characterizes current discussions of literary and cultural studies.
