The automotive industry is the third largest business in the country, having a significant economic impact and contributing to the growth of exportations. There is an increase in the competitiveness in this sector and so the need to improve and develop all manufacturing processes. It comprehends standards of quality and lower costs to foster continuous improvement in production. The production systems, already implemented, must be adapted to the customer demand and the balance of production lines is an important tool to assist this purpose. The balance of production lines consists in the change of operations and workstations, resulting in a continuous flow in production and the reduction of unproductive timings. This dissertation is the result of the analysis of an assembly line. It was analysed that the line did not reach its maximum production rate (349 units per 8 hours of work), and all production systems were not reaching the best capacity. There were workers with less work and others overloaded. Also, there were in the line, equipment limiting the system, bottlenecks. The objective of this dissertation is, with the support of simulation, to develop a model that adds value to productivity and to create scenarios with the balance of tasks and with the increase of bottleneck equipment to increase the production rate. There will be an evaluation of the performance criteria of the simulation model under study, such as the rate of utilization of the operator and the rate of waiting of equipment. In order to find alternatives to the line problem (increase of production capacity), two large groups of scenarios will be evaluated; one with a different assignment of tasks from the operators and another with the increase of equipment. During the study of the scenario groups, several scenarios will be created in Simul8 software until the best production rate is achieved. In conclusion, the most viable scenario is the one with the task distribution, as the other scenario requires greater financial investment (with the addition of machinery). In the first scenario there will not be any additional costs. The scenario of the different attribution of tasks would be the best alternative, because although in both scenarios there are the same final number of units produced, the implementation of equipment assumes a greater investment. The simulated scenario must be able to be applied in the study line.
