dc.description.abstract | This Monograph was developed as an integral part of the Integrated Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra. The relevance of this subject is that cancer is the disease of the 21st century. The diagnosis of oncologic disease is still associated with fatal evolution, and the accompanying treatments cause psychological suffering for the patient and his family. Social alarms regarding an increased occurrence of cancer have been more frequent in recent years, reflecting an increase in the social perception of the disease. In addition, there is an increase in the demand for complementary or alternative treatments in hope of a cure, impediment of progression, symptomatic relief, as well as a complement to conventional therapy. Many of these “natural” products are considered safe by the patient because they are extracted from nature and therefore the patient does not disclose their use to the health professional, which may jeopardize the effectiveness or safety of the treatment. This monograph is based on a survey applied at the Oncology Service of Hospital da Senhora da Oliveira Guimarães to cancer patients undergoing antineoplastic chemotherapy treatment. | eng |
