This research focuses on the possible relationship between bullying, emotional intelligence, interpersonal trust, mental health and satisfaction with life, trying to analyze if there are differences in these constructs according to gender. Reference will also be made to the consequences that may result from the exposure, of adolescents, to a type of intentional and repeated violence in the school. Finally, we analyzed the predictive value of emotional intelligence in victimization and victimization and satisfaction with life. The sample used for this research consists of 330 adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years, attending the 3rd cycle of two public schools in the north and center of Portugal. Among the instruments used are: a Sociodemographic Questionnaire; the Generalized Trust Beliefs-Late Adolescents scale (CGC-A); the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS); the Anxiety, Depression and Stress scales for children’s (EADS-21-C); the Emotional Quotient Inventory–Young Version/shor-form (EQI-yv); an Portuguese adaptation of Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale (MPVS) and, finally, the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale. The results indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between victimization and as variables related to mental health (anxiety, depression and stress); it was verified the existence of negative and significant relationships between victimization and emotional intelligence, interpersonal trust and satisfaction with life, with intelligence acting as a predictive variable of victimization, just as victimization allows predicting less satisfaction with life. With regard to gender differences, it was found that there were only no statistically and significant differences between genders in social victimization, while these differences were observed in physical, verbal, and attacking property.Since bullying is a phenomenon with numerous consequences in the various domains of the development of the individual, it becomes important to invest in prevention strategies and new interventions, in order to eradicate this phenomenon that has been growing. |
