dc.description.abstract | The internship allows us to integrate and apply the knowledge acquired during the master in pharmaceutical sciences. My internship was realized at the Hospital and University Centre of Coimbra and the pharmacy Figueiredo, in Coimbra, and the respective reports follow the model of SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats).Parkinson's disease is quite common worldwide, especially in the older population. This disease is the result of a neuronal degeneration and consequent loss of dopaminergic neurons. Its causes of this disease are still little known, but it is known that both genetic factors like environmental factors may contribute to the emergence and development of the same.Existing treatments currently aim to increase levels of dopamine, however, they are ineffective with regard to disease progression and some of them cause harmful side effects to the quality of life of the patient, making it necessary to investigate and produce new drugs able to prevent the development of Parkinson's disease and with less severe adverse effects. Then comes the opportunity to invest on the development of new therapeutics anti-Parkinson, based on administration of cannabinoids or their synthetic analogues. This is because the endocannabinoid system is involved in many physiological processes which are fundamental in Parkinson's disease.Apparently, the endocannabinoid system presents important properties that will be useful and beneficial in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, however, cannabis and the cannabinoids and all the mechanisms involved are extremely complex, so, despite all the efforts to investigate the therapeutic potential of cannabis plant, there are still certain lesser known topics that need more investigation. | eng |
