Abstract: AbstractThe prevalence of obesity in the past few decades has been increasing in a drastic way,so much so that it is imperative to find new alternatives to treat the disease. The brown andbeige adipose tissues play a major role in the homeostatic regulation of the organism, byinducing the nonshivering thermogenesis, through the overexpression of the UCP1 protein inthe adipocytes mitochondria. This protein allows H+ ions to flow into the mitochondrialmatrix, generating energy that is dispersed in the form of heat. Recent data has shown thatboth environmental conditions and hormones, and even certain types of food, can stimulatethe thermogenesis in the adipocytes of these tissues, and by doing so, contributing to thereduction of the excess weight. Given the energetic potential these tissues have been showing, several anti-obesity pharmacological studies have been conducted, which have shown goodresults in obese rodents. The association between non-pharmacological strategies, such as dietand exercise, with the discovery of a drug capable of increasing the activity of theaforementioned tissues in a safe and effective manner, makes both brown adipocytes and beigeadipocytes a promising target for future lines of treatment for obesity.
