INTRODUCTION: Perfectionism and Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) have been associated with psychopathology, in particular with Obsessive-Compulsive (OC) symptoms. Recent studies showed that the prevalence of OC symptoms are increasing, being this type of symptoms associated with poorer quality of life. The aim of the present study is to corroborate if offspring RNT is a mediator of the relationship between parent’s Perfectionism and their offspring Obsessive Compulsive symptoms.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants of this study were 219 university students (77.2% females; average age=20.64+1.99; 18-32 years old) and their parents, who accepted, voluntarily and anonymously, to answer the survey. All of the self-reported questionnaires were validated: Frost and Hewitt & Flett Multidimensional Perfectionism Scales (to evaluate two composite dimensions - Perfectionistic Concerns and Perfectionistic Strivings), the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire and Maudsley Obsessional-Compulsive Inventory.RESULTS: The mediation model 1 [PreocAV_FP (independent variable) – QPP_T (mediator variable) – MOCI_DR (dependent variable/outcome)] revealed significant total (coefficient= 0.03, SE= 0.01, IC95%=0.01-0.06) and indirect effects (Coefficient= 0.03, SE = 0.01, IC95% = 0.01-0.04) and explained 19% of the variance of the dimension “Doubts and Rumination”. The mediation model 2 [EsfPerd_FP (independente variable) – QPP_T (mediator variable) – MOCI_V (dependent variable/outcome)] did not showed statistical significant results for total, direct and indirect effects. The mediation model 3 [EstPerf_M (independent variable) – QPP_T (mediator variable) – MOCI_L (dependent variable/outcome)] presented significant total (Coefficient= 0.03, SE = 0.01, IC95% = 0.00-0.61) and direct effects (Coefficient = 0.03, SE = 0.01, IC95% = 0.00-0.06) and explained 3% of the variance of the dimension “Cleaning”.DISCUSSION: RNT revealed to be a mediator of the relationship between offspring OC symptoms (Doubts and Rumination) and the offspring perception of their parents’ perfectionism (Perfectionistic concerns) and of the relationship between the offspring OC symptoms (and Cleansing) and the maternal Perfectionistic efforts. Offspring perception of their parents’ perfectionism explained much higher percentages of OC symptoms (19% vs 3%) than the perfectionism levels of their mothers (self-reported). As expected, the mediation models showed positive effect between RNT and symptoms, showing that the higher the RNT levels are, the greater the symptom levels. In future studies sample size must be increased in order to test other types of mediation models.
