Uma (Re)visão da Tradução Automática

Abstract

Este relatório de estágio pretende, para além de dar a conhecer um pouco do universo, da história e da evolução da tradução automática, mostrar a harmonia entre a tradução automática e o processo de revisão: a pós-edição. A tradução automática, como se poderá perceber durante o relatório, teve uma evolução significativa graças ao progresso tecnológico inovador que se fez sentir durante o século XX e graças à indústria da guerra. Nos dias de hoje, a tradução automática desempenha um papel importante e ativo na comunidade de tradução, quer seja através dos sistemas de tradução automática, das memórias de tradução ou mesmo das CAT Tools, hoje em dia utilizadas pela grande maioria dos tradutores, uma vez que ajudam a poupar tempo durante o processo de tradução. O facto de este tema ocupar um papel tão importante na atualidade do mundo da tradução fez com que eu tivesse a vontade de o explorar e utilizar como tema do meu relatório de estágio. Neste relatório, para além de mostrar a evolução dos sistemas de tradução automática, irei, também, fazer uma breve exposição das fragilidades que estes apresentam. Fragilidades que condicionam a sua utilização enquanto substituição dos seres humanos como tradutores, propósito para os quais foram desenvolvidos. Durante o trabalho de investigação desenvolvido, foi fácil perceber que uma das fragilidades que os sistemas de tradução automática apresentam é o facto de produzirem conteúdo com erros. Este tema será desenvolvido numa parte final do relatório, apoiado por um breve estudo de caso realizado a partir de material recolhido durante o estágio curricular.

In addition to make some pieces of the universe, history and evolution of machine translation known, this Report intends to show the harmony between machine translation and the revision process: the post-editing universe. As you will be able to understand throughout these pages, machine translation had a significant evolution thanks to the groundbreaking technological progress that took place during the 20th century and due to the war industry. Currently machine translation plays an important and active role in the translation community, either through the machine translation systems, the translation memories or even the CAT Tools, used nowadays by a large number of translators since these tools help them save time during the translation process. The reason why it plays such an important role in the translation world nowadays made me want to explore it and use it as a theme for my Report. Besides showing you the evolution of the machine translation system in this Report, I will also provide evidence about their weaknesses. These weaknesses restrain the usage of these systems as a substitution for human beings as translators, the purpose for which they were developed. During the research work developed in order to produce this Report, it was easy to notice that one of the weaknesses the machine translation system have is the fact that they generate output with errors. This theme is going to be explored in a final section of the Report, sustained by a brief study case conducted based on material that I collected during the internship.
