Abstract: Introdução: O modelo estrutural de traços de personalidade HEXACO estipula seis fatores ou dimensões – Honestidade-Humildade (H), Emocionalidade (E), Extroversão (X), Amabilidade (A), Conscienciosidade (C) e Abertura à Experiência (O).
Introduction: The HEXACO structural model of personality posits that personality traits consists of six factors or dimensions – Honesty-Humility (H), Emotionality (E), Extraversion (X), Agreeableness (A), Conscientiousness (C) and Openness to Experience (O). The emergence of a new dimension of personality (H) was the result of years of lexical studies in several languages and cultures. The most widely used inventory is the HEXACO-PI-R, with the HEXACO-60 being its shorter version. Objective: To test the factor structure of the Portuguese version of the HEXACO-60 and to analyse its psychometric properties, more specifically, to study the construct, concurrent and convergent-divergent validity as well as its reliability (internal consistency and temporal stability).Method: A sample composed of 632 university students (65.5% women), aged between 17 and 34 years old (M = 21.42; SD = 2.28) answered the Portuguese version of the HEXACO-60, as well as other validated instruments in samples of university students: Dirty Dozen, Hewitt & Flett Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale-13, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Psychological Entitlement Scale, Perfectionism Self-Presentation Scale, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales-21, NEO Five Factor Inventory-20 and Big Three Perfectionism Scale. A sub-sample of 212 participants completed the HEXACO-60 again after approximately two months. Results: The factor structure of the initial first order model resulted in a poor fit. After eliminating items with loadings lower than .30 (6, 19 and 36) and correlating items errors, the second order model revealed a marginal acceptable fit (X²/df = 2.317; TLI = 0.787; CFI = 0.801; GFI = 0.825; RMSEA = 0.046). The six dimensions of HEXACO-60 demonstrated acceptable to good internal consistency reliability with Cronbach's alphas ranging from .72 (O) to .82 (H and X) and good temporal stability (r > .56, p < .001). The facets correlated positively and with high magnitude with the associated dimension. Significant correlations were found between the HEXACO-60 dimensions with the NEO-FFI-20 dimension, except for the O dimension. For the convergent-divergent validity, we obtained expected correlations with the other scales.Discussion and Conclusion: The HEXACO-60 model adjusted to a sample of Portuguese students revealed an acceptable marginal fit and adequate psychometric properties, presenting good construct, concurrent, convergent-divergent validity as well as reliability (internal consistency and temporal stability). However, future research is required to confirm the factor structure in the Portuguese population.
