INTRODUCTION: Depression affects over 300 million people and represents the first cause of disability worldwide, being common its comorbidity with anxiety disorders. Several predisposing factors for both are known, from genetic to environmental ones (example: parental styles).Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) has been considered a transdiagnostic process since it is associated with various psychopathological conditions, specifically depression and anxiety. Some parental styles show correlation with children psychopathology, but this association is not consensual and may differ depending on whether it comes from the father or the mother. AIMS: To analyze if the parents’ different parental styles are mediators of the relationship between the RNT and the levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms, in their offspring.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were 259 universitary students (78,0% female; average age=20,64±1,99; from 18 to 32 years old) and their parents, who fulfilled a set of self-report questionnaires validated for the Portuguese population: the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire; Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire; Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale and “Me and my father/mother”, evaluating the last the parental styles.RESULTS: The QPP and all of the parental styles showed significant correlation with the outcomes (Depression and Anxiety), with the exception of maternal Psychological Control and the paternal Behaviour Control. The highest correlation was observed between RNT and Depression (.60), being moderate between RNT and Anxiety (.47). The other correlations were of low magnitude. In the mediation model between RNT and offspring Depression the effects were: total effect of 0,198 (EP=0,020), direct effect of 0,176 (EP=0,021), indirect effect of 0,022 (EP=0,010); only the father’s Responsiveness showed a mediator effect. For the mediation model concerning the anxiety symptoms, the total effect was of 0,178 (EP=0,019), the direct effect of 0,160 (EP=0,020), the indirect effect of 0,018 (EP=0,009) and none parental style was proved being a mediator. DISCUSSION: The negative parental styles were positively correlated with Depression, and Anxiety; the Responsiveness and the Affection correlated negatively with the last two.In which respects parental styles, all correlated with both outcomes in offspring, except the maternal Psychological Control with the anxiety symptoms and the paternal Behaviour Control with both of them. Also in the mediation models, the paternal behaviour demonstrated a greater influence than the maternal, which did not establish any mediator effect. CONCLUSION: Only the paternal Responsiveness has proved to be a mediator between RNT and offspring’s Depression. . Regarding anxiety symptoms, we concluded that the RNT has the predominant role in their development.
