O Espaço da Escultura na Arquitetura Moderna: Ferramentas de projeto para desenhar a relação espacial do objeto escultórico na Arquitetura

Abstract

The aim of this study is to carry out a critical analysis of the role of Sculpture in modern Architecture. It is important to gain a deeper understanding of the importance, framing and esthetic consistency of sculptural objects and how their impact can be fully maximized in architectural settings which are closely connected to the sculptures. It also aims to identify the methods and instruments used in the development of these spaces, with a view to providing the observer with an interconnected spatial experience of both artistic areas.The architect develops an empirical understanding of these spatial features and it is their responsibility to produce settings where three dimensional non-utilitarian objects are arranged, experienced and housed, and to create structures which are defined by their surroundings but which in turn help define those spaces. In addition, artists explore the artistic features and the flexible and organic nature of the settings and use certain concepts, such as arrangement, atmosphere and site-specificity, in order to understand the performative possibilities of the objects in those spaces and the variation of scale provided by the monuments’ structure and the artefacts. The objective of the first phase of this study was to reflect upon the changes the sculptures undergo in the architectural spaces and the connection between these two art forms, thus creating the basis, from a practical to a conceptual perspective, for the dialectic interactions between space and time, form and structure and the observer. A further goal was to understand the common and tangential methodological approaches of these two art forms and how their features can recreate different practices within those spaces. This research aims to reflect upon the theme with reference to relevant bibliographical sources, whilst at the same time analyzing case studies which explore the relationships between architecture and sculpture. This is carried out through the analysis of diverse spaces, the underpinnings and objectives of different projects, as well as the way in which they connect with the observer, in order to stimulate their experience of these settings.

Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão crítica sobre o espaço da escultura na arquitetura moderna. Considera-se pertinente compreender a importância, enquadramento e espessura estética que o objeto escultórico pode usufruir na presença de uma arquitetura que estabeleça relações firmes com esta arte, esclarecendo quais são os métodos e ferramentas aplicadas no processo de projeto para o desenvolvimento destes espaços, com o objetivo de proporcionar ao observador uma experiência espacial cruzada entre estas duas disciplinas.O arquiteto desenvolve um conhecimento empírico sobre estes conteúdos espaciais. Cabe a ele, a produção de realidades onde se organizam, experienciam, hospedam objetos tridimensionais não utilitários, estruturas que são definidas pelo espaço que as contém e definem esse espaço. Por seu lado, os artistas exploram as propriedades plásticas, a dimensão flexível, orgânica desse espaço para compreenderem por via de conceitos como instalação, atmosfera e site-specific, as possibilidades performativas dos objetos no espaço e da variação de escala que é proporcionada pela estrutura monumental e o artefacto.Numa fase inicial do trabalho, pretende-se refletir sobre as alterações ocorridas na escultura no campo arquitetónico e sobre as ligações sensíveis entre estas duas artes que tomam como matéria-prima, quer no plano prático quer no plano conceptual, as interações dialéticas entre o espaço-tempo, o observador e a forma-estrutura. Pretende-se também, perceber as metodologias de trabalho que são comuns e tangenciais entre as duas artes e o modo como as suas características podem proporcionar diferentes práticas espaciais.Esta investigação procura refletir sobre o tema através de fontes bibliográficas pertinentes, analisando, igualmente, os estudos de caso que exploram as relações entre a arquitetura e a escultura, através de uma diversidade de espaços, em consequência das premissas projetuais, da intencionalidade do projeto e do seu processo de conceção para estimular a vivência destes espaços ao utilizador.
