Tractors have been described as one of the most deadly farming implements concerning agricultural activity. In the portuguese case, the scientific investigations about this problem are practically nonexistent. There are only some statistical studies performed by several identities in which the presented data show some discrepancy, pinpointing the possibility of an underreporting of these accidents to all of the autorities involved. That way, the present study intended to cme forth with a casuistic study about fatal tractor accidents in Portugal, between January of 2005 and December of 2014, more specifically, the analysis and evaluation of the resulting lesions and death circumstances. This study was performed by the observation of autopsy reports carried out in the Functional Unity of Pathology (UFPF) of the Delegation of the Centre Branch of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (INMLCF,I.P.). In this study, 3508 processes were analysed and in which several variables were considered.Tractor accidents represented 1,62% of the total of the number of autopsies performed in this unit and 6,88% of the total of the number of deaths caused by road accidents. These fatalities occurred mainly in May and October. The majority of victims is characterized as being retiered males between the ages of 61 and 70, being the tractor drivers and who did not survive more than 24 hours after the accident. Concerning the vehicle, the bulk of accidents occurred while on a tractor. However, the information available on the autopsy results relating to the use of protective structures is almost null.Rollover in sloping land was the most common type of accident and craneal-meningo-encephalic, thoracic and abdominal traumatic injuries take the first place as the cause of death. Looking at the complementary exams from the Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology (QTF) Service of INMLCF, I.P., specially to the analysis of the ethanol concentration in the blood, 16,2% of all of the analysed cases showed a concentration above what is stipulated by the law (<0,5g/L). To assist the medical-legal examination itself, Forensic Pathological Anatomy (APH) exams were also performed to help determine the cause of death. These results were also taken into account in the presente study.
