Since the discovery of the existence of the Earth’s magnetic field, scientists started questioning themselves about its importance and influence in life and the living systems. Though there is a good deal of things that have already been discovered, there is so much more that needs to be studied since there is still a lot questions unanswered. One of the huge findings that proved the existence of a strong relation between the magnetic field and life was the discovery of magnetotactic bacteria. Magnetotactic bacteria are a group of bacteria capable of synthesizing magnetic nanoparticles, known as magnetosomes that give them the ability of moving not only in the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field but also in the direction of induced magnetic fields. These properties give to this group of bacteria very unique characteristics that we can take advantage of, with applicability in very diverse application fields, particularly in the medicine field, where these bacteria and their magnetosomes can perform functions as drug carriers and can be used in magnetic resonance and in oncological therapy.
