One of State Liberal’s first measurements was the extinguishing of all religious orders and confiscation of their assets. Within Coimbra, seat of the only Portuguese University, were sold or occupied by the state twenty-two Colleges and seven Convents. One year after, the municipal council requested some of these plots and buildings, initiating the transformation of the city according to the new principles of salubrity. This paper intends to present how Coimbra became a modern city in consequence of the appropriation of Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, transferred to the municipality in 1839. These properties will accommodate the city hall and all the government bureaus, the court as well as the Post Office. The Market will be implanted in the orangery and the haystack will be converted into Slaughterhouse. But fundamentally, will be within the former Monastery Farm that the city council will create the first modern quarters, the Bairro de Santa Cruz. |
