Title: | Sexualidade e parto: em busca do elo perdido | Other Titles: | Sexuality and childbirth: searching for the missing link | Authors: | Luz, Lia | Keywords: | Sociologia das ausências e das emergências; Parto; Sexualidade; Sociology of absences and sociology of energences; Childbirth; Sexuality | Issue Date: | 2017 | Publisher: | UFRN | Serial title, monograph or event: | Cronos | Volume: | 18 | Issue: | 2 | Place of publication or event: | Natal | Abstract: | Tendo-se como base metodológica a sociologia das ausências e a sociologia das emergências proposta por Boaventura de Sousa Santos, este artigo realiza uma cartografia simbólica teórica e prática
By applying, as a methodological base, the sociology of absences and the sociology of emergence proposed by Boaventura de Sousa Santos, this paper produces a theoretical and practical symbolic cartography about the relationship between sexuality and childbirth. In the first part, it is debated how the biomedicine hegemonic paradigm, the so called technocratic model, accordingly to the categorization proposed by Davis-Floyd, has disconnected childbirth from its sexual nature. Next, the sexuality of childbirth is discussed in a literature review that includes the results of the most recent academic research about the subject, creating a theoretical base that situates childbirth as an inherently sexual event. On the empirical field, the theme is debated from the personal narratives and perceptions of the mothers from the intentional community of Tamera, in southern Portugal, chosen as research locus for having a culture of free (love and) sexuality and also for encouraging home planned childbirth, two fundamental ingredients to allow the reconnection of the link between sexuality and childbirth. This stage was conducted with the goal to identify how these women expressed and experienced their sexuality during labor and childbirth. It is concluded that childbirth is an intrinsically sexual event, very striking in women’s sexual cycle, besides being considered extremely empowering, with consequences not only for their sexual lives, but for their lives as a whole. |
