Abstract

As infecções do tracto urinário são infecções bacterianas comummente encontradas em clínica geral, e a terapia empírica é a abordagem escolhida para a maioria dos casos. Para o melhor tratamento, o médico de clínica geral, para além dos sintomas do paciente deve conhecer a etiologia e a susceptibilidade dos uropatogéneos. Este Trabalho aborda por faixa etária e sexo, a classificação, a epidemiologia, os factores de risco e a etiologia da infecção do tracto urinário. A prevenção e a patogenia da doença, a correspondente investigação clínica e laboratorial e, as recomendações actuais de tratamento, também serão revistas. As infecções do tracto urinário durante a gravidez e as infecções associadas ao cateter urinário serão igualmente abordadas

Urinary tract infections are common bacterial infections encountered in general practice, and empirical therapy is the approach chosen for the majority of cases. For the optimal treatment, the general practitioner, besides the symptoms of de patient, should know the aetiology and susceptibility of uropathogens. This Work will review, by age group and gender, the classification, the epidemiology, the risk factors and aetiology of urinary tract infection. The prevention and pathogenesis of the disease, the corresponding clinical and laboratory research, and current treatment recommendations, will also be reviewed. The urinary tract infections during pregnancy and infections associated with urinary catheter will also be discussed
