Urbanidade e sociabilidade. Notas acerca da “arte de bem viver” em Portugal no século XVIII/Urbanity and sociability. Some notes about “the art of living” in Portugal in the eighteenth century

Abstract

Neste artigo analisamos as condições de produção e circulação de ideias que distinguem comportamentos e conformam definições de género, no século XVIII. As normas de convívio social, ajustadas a novas formas de sociabilidade, correlacionam mecanismos de imposição de valores com explícitos motivos de autorregulação de sentimentos, emoções e comportamentos. A importância dada à conversação, às técnicas de convívio social e ao corpo como espaço semiótico de comunicação demarcam a emergência de um novo campo cultural e simbólico a partir do qual os indivíduos se (re)inventam a si próprios. Neste processo dinâmico de mudança de paradigmas comportamentais e morais estão implicados a moda, a leitura de livros de contos e de novelas filosóficas, cuja vulgarização é claramente denunciada por censores portugueses em finais do século XVIII.

The focus of this study is the production and diffusion of ideas distinguishing behaviors and shaping gender definitions in the 18th century. Social interaction rules, adjusted to new forms of sociability, determine a correlation between mechanisms of imposition of values with explicit reasons of self-regulation of emotions and behaviors. The importance attributed to certain topics namely conversation, socializing techniques and attitudes, and also to the body as a semiotic space of communication, shape the advent of the new cultural and symbolic template from which individuals (re) invent themselves. In this dynamic change process of behavioral and moral paradigms, fashion and reading of short stories books and philosophical novels are implicated, whose popularization is clearly denounced by Portuguese censors in the late 18th century.
