Abstract: Th is paper proposes a translation and commentary of the Preface in elegiac couplets that, in the beginning of the first century BC, Meleager of Gadara composed as means of presentation of his personal anthology of Greek epigram. In such an ecphrastic poem we search for the meaning of the global metaphor of the garland weaving, where each flower (or fruit) symbolizes a poet, as well as the understanding of the botanical species that can be identified.
