“Labour relations” or “industrial relations” are terms that historically raised several reflections concerning the role of the trade union movement. Over time, those “relations” were almost always considered as asymmetrical, even during the “30 glorious”, when the welfare state and full employment were consecrated as redistributive mechanisms and when neocorporatism and social consensus among different social actors was the rule. The research agenda in industrial relations today is strongly marked by austerity policies that calls into question the traditional role of trade unions. It matters, therefore, to recover some of the theoretical traditions of industrial relations and to see to what extent they conform to the climate of social backlash experienced in the feld of labor relations. On the other hand, with reference to the Portuguese case, we describe some emerging research topics in this feld.
