This MSc Thesis was developed under the scope of continuous improvement project of R&D department of Ansell Portugal. Ansell is the global leader in protection solutions. Thus, this company always seeks to improve the properties of its products, making them more comfortable, with better performance and safe use. The purpose of this work was to develop textile gloves with hydrophobic (water repellent) and oleophobic (oil repellent) coating, using the sol-gel technology, ensuring self-cleaning and easy-to-clean properties on the glove. The development strategy used in this project required the use of a simple process, easy to apply in the production process of the company, at no significant extra cost and allowing quick implementation. Because of the simplified strategy that the company desires, there was no time to developed of a new polymer, thus one commercial sol-gel precursor was used, the Dynasylan® F 8815 (a fluroalkyl water-borne siloxane), which modifies the textile surface making it water and oil repellent due to a decrease in the surface energy. Experimental tests were performed by applying Dynasylan® on the textile glove (liner), and it was possible to confirm the efficacy of its repellency properties. The oleophobicity and hydrophobicity were evaluated by measuring the water contact angle (to verify hydrophobicity), and diiodomethane and n-hexadecane (to verify oleophobicity). The optimized conditions to apply Dynasylan® correspond to the use of an aqueous solution with 5% (v/v) Dynasylan, applied by dip-coating with an immersion time of 10 min and posteriorly cured at 140°C during 30 min. A pre-treatment plasma was also tested, but it did not lead to significant improvement to justify an investment in a plasma equipment. Ansell Portugal was a large volume of sales of textile gloves coated with polymeric compounds (acrylonitrile-butadiene and polyurethane), thus the effect of Dynasylan® on these coatings was also tested. A reference glove coated with two polymer "dips" (immersion into two polymer compounds) was used, which had initial contact angle values with water, diiodomethane and n-hexadecane less than 90º, and was therefore, hydrophilic and oleophilic. After treatment with Dynasylan®, the prototypes of these gloves had water contact angles of 159º in the textile part (back of the hand) and 140º in the region with polymer coating (palm of the hand) . For diiodomethane measurements, the contact angles were 129º in the back and 122º in the palm. The necessary modification of the production process of the gloves to introduce a new stage in the production line for a tank with the aqueous solution with Dynasylan® was also addressed. The best results were achieved when Dynasylan® was introduced after the leaching stage and before the vulcanization process of the gloves. In this way this vulcanization stage was availed for Dynasylan® curing. Durability tests were also made to test the surface coating resistance, namely by studying the washing resistance and performing abrasion tests (EN388:2005). It was confirmed the water and oil repellence after 5 required washes. In the abrasion test, the water repellence is maintained, up to level 2 (level of disruption of the original gloves), but the oil repellence is lost after 100 cycles (level 1) although the glove remains intact until level 4. The work accomplished during this dissertation led the developing of water and oil repellent coatings, by the sol-gel technology, for textile gloves and gloves with polymeric coatings (acrylonitrile-butadiene and polyurethane). The studied Dynasylan® coating can be easily reproduced in the current production lines of Ansell Portugal and used in multiple product references.
