Title: | Introdução de Elementos Distintivos em Resinas de Poliester | Authors: | Marques, Pedro Xavier Figueira | Orientador: | Serra, Arménio Coimbra Coelho, Jorge |
Keywords: | Fluoresceína; Vermelho de Metilo; Fluorescência; Resinas de Poliéster; Polímeros; Fluorescein; Methyl Red; Fluorescence; Polyester Resins; Polymers | Issue Date: | 19-Sep-2014 | Place of publication or event: | Coimbra | Abstract: | As resinas de poliéster são um termoplástico com diversas aplicações práticas.
The polyester resins are a thermoplastic with many practical applications. The material combines an huge variety of polymer properties: it is transparent, translucent over a wide range of wavelengths, is one of lighter plastics in the market, it has density values between 1040-1065 g/cm3 , exhibits good stiffness and is stable in aggressive environments. Moreover, these materials can be used in a wide range of applications in different fields, since food wraps, contact lenses, road marks, and more. In this work, the possibility of introducing distinctive elements (fluorescein and methyl red) in polyester resins in order to change their optical characteristics when exposed to external stimulus, such as light or pH variations was studied. Initially, molecules containing distinctive elements were prepared. The aim of this procedure is once these elements are incorporated into the resins, the material would be able to respond to an intended stimuli. More specifically, we introduce fluorescein and methyl red in a molecule of styrene. The characterization of these molecules was performed by 1H NMR. After the alteration and isolation of the molecules containing fluorescein and methyl red, they were introduced into polystyrene resins in the form of test pieces, which were analyzed by spectrophotometry and fluorescence spectrophotometry. Furthermore, the ability of the test pieces to change their color at differents pH was studied. The methyl red was also introduced on the surface of the samples using a surface polymerization, as well as within a hydrogel, so that their characteristics were exploited to the maximum. |
