The energy efficiency of buildings depends on the behaviour of its users and the energy performance of each one of the aspects which characterize them, namely the surrounding environment. On the other hand, the energy efficiency of this depends much on the solution used on the construction of their potentially more problematic elements, particularly glazing systems. This led to the fact that the main component of glazing, the windows, are gradually more effective, but have also an increasingly higher acquisition cost. It is, therefore, legitimate to question whether the return achieved in terms of energy saving offsets the additional economic effort required to install more energy efficient windows. This work intends to characterize the windows usually installed in the Portuguese buildings, either in terms of energy quality or acquisition costs, and to evaluate the relationship between these two parameters. Its aim is also to relate the windows acquisition cost with the reduction of the energy costs they promote, and thus identify its optimal cost-effectiveness. A very wide range of window manufacturers was contacted and asked to quote windows with the most commonly installed size and for energy qualities graded from very bad to excellent, to which 18 responded. Afterwards, their energy characteristics were determined using for this end the Calumen II and Guardian Configurator software. Hence, it was achieved a characterization of the windows in terms of acquisition cost and energy quality. To identify the optimal cost-effectiveness of the windows, the concept of Equivalent Annual Cost (EAC) of the building was considered. For this purpose it was used the SEnergEd software which makes the simulation of the energy performance and the EAC of the buildings through a calculation method based on the hourly mono zone dynamic model described in ISO 13790 (2006). The energy class of windows with lower EAC for 4 building typologies and for 3 typical climate conditions of Portugal was identified. From the results obtained, it was concluded that there is no relationship between the optimal window and the building form factor or the glazed area factor. What determines the optimal window to be installed is the use of building typology.
