Title: | Análise de muros reforçados com geossintéticos - deformação de face | Authors: | Monteiro, Katia Denise Tavares | Orientador: | Pinto, Maria Isabel Moita Correia, António Alberto Santos |

The concept of reinforcement of earth retaining walls dates back to antiquity and considerably evolution has been occurring over the past 50 years. It is nowadays a worldwide technique in geotechnical works. Reinforcement is possible when materials with tensile strength and adhesion are incorporated, enabling the soil being stressed at such levels that otherwise would lead to failure. With scientific and technological progress of mankind, the materials used have changed from natural to metal and finally synthetic materials, among them, the geosynthetics. Nowadays, retaining walls reinforced with geosynthetics are already an accepted alternative to gravity walls and other conventional retaining structures. Design of these structures has also evolved, and there are several design methods capable of verifying the global stability of the structure – limit equilibrium methods. However, geosynthetic reinforcement elements are extensible and therefore they work through the soil-reinforcement interface that develops due to the deformation of the wall itself and its elements. This deformation needs to be controlled to avoid functional and structural problems. The purpose of the study described herein is to control the deformation for reinforcement of retaining walls with geosynthetics. It intends to continue the work carried out by Correia (2003), by evaluating the feasibility of his proposed method to calculate the face deformation and pressures acting on the rear face of the earth walls reinforced with geosynthetics. To achieve this goal, the simple method proposed by Correia (2003) was applied to four different problems presented in literature. The calculated horizontal deformation of the face was found to compare reasonably well with those of the referred problems. It can be concluded that the method under consideration can be a good option for future research and practical applications, since the alternative and commonly used solution - numerical modelling - is far more complex and expensive. |
