The increasing use of cold-formed steel (CFS) in construction industry witnessed in the last few decades led to the development of calculation methods to predict the response of CFS structural members under loading, and soon the first design standards for CFS structures at room temperature have appeared. However, and despite of the growing popularity of these steel structures and the absolute need to ensure their safety in any situation likely to occur during their lifetime, including a fire situation, specific standards for fire design of CFS structures were not yet established, a gap that needs to be overcome. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate the behaviour of CFS flexural members under fire conditions. This research is focused on the experimental evaluation of the behaviour of CFS sigma beams at elevated temperatures. The study aimed to investigate the effects of the section shape, of the axial restraint to thermal elongation and the rotational restraint at beams supports in their fire resistance. The main conclusions of the experimental investigation were that CFS sigma beams have a low fire resistance and are highly susceptible to lateral-torsional and distorcional buckling phenomenon, but the limitation enforced by EN 1993-1-2:2005 that the temperature of Class 4 cross-sections should not exceed 350ºC at any time seems to be too conservative, since the beams presented critical temperatures quite higher than the aforementioned 350ºC. On the other hand, this study showed that the axial restraint to thermal elongation is responsible for a significant reduction of CFS critical times and temperatures, whereas the rotational restraint has a favourable effect on the beams fire resistance, and that these effects can be more or less pronounced depending on the relationship between the axial stiffness of the beam and the axial restraint to thermal elongation conferred by the surrounding structure and the relationship between the rotational stiffness of the beam and the rotational restraint at beam supports.
