This work presents the validation and use of a numerical model based on the effective-heat capacity method, which aims to evaluate the heat transfer with melting/solidification of a microencapsulated phase change material (PCM) contained in rectangular-section vertical cavities. For the purposes of validation and calibration of the model, the experimental results obtained by Soares et al. [1,2] were considered. Furthermore, the effect of inserting an energy storage unit (ESU) on the back of a photovoltaic device (PV/PCM system) was also analyzed. The melting and solidification processes of the PCM - Micronal DS 5001 X were simulated through a bidimensional transient version of the model. Conduction was considered as the only heat transfer mechanism, associated with phase change. The effect of adding metallic fins in the PCM domain was also investigated. The time required for the PCM melting and solidification was determined for the different cases considered in the parametric study, as well as the energy absorbed/released by the PCM. It was found that the melting time was similar for the ESUs with 1 and 5 cavities. It was observed that the time required for the solidification process is progressively reduced as the number of cavities is increased. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental results available in the literature [1,2]. By comparing the evolution of the temperature in the PV cells of the PV/PCM and the conventional PV systems (with and without the ESU, respectively), it was observed an effective thermal regulation in the period from 9 am till 3 pm. Regarding the energy performance of the PV/PCM system in a typical summer day, considering the climatic conditions of Coimbra, it was found that the ideal thickness of the PCM module is 3 cm.
