Os Monólitos de Rachel Whiteread

Abstract

A memória espacial é composta por uma sucessão de eventos que tomaram lugar na nossa vida e que ficaram gravados. Eventos esses que tiveram um lugar e um propósito. A passagem ou transferência deste tipo de conhecimento com os outros é que torna emocionante a vida do quotidiano. O entendimento do arquitecto sobre este conhecimento é materializado em espaço para viver e experimentar, espaço esse que é o palco da vida, onde tudo acontece. Os artistas “desafiam” esse conhecimento, procuram a poesia e materializam-no. Vivemno com o corpo e transformam-no num objecto. Rachel Whiteread é uma desafiadora da identidade da Arquitectura e da memória. Ela petrifica o vazio, o espaço negativo, não construído, o in-between things, suscitando de forma emotiva a memória e a vontade de infinitude da mesma. Esta intenção da artista traz à Arquitectura uma visão fresca e material daquilo que o arquitecto projecta. Ela materializa o impalpável arquitectónico, pelo qual um arquitecto luta toda a sua vida. É esta percepção do impalpável arquitectónico que é procurado nesta dissertação. O que traz de novo ao seu entendimento.

Spatial memory is composed of a succession of events that have taken place in our lives and were recorded, events that had a place and a purpose. The access or transference of such knowledge with others is what makes everyday life exciting. The understanding of the architect about this matter is materialized in space to live and experience, space that is the stage of life where everything happens. Artists "challenge" that knowledge; they seek poetry and materialize it. They live it with their body and they transform it in an object. Rachel Whiteread is a challenger of Architecture identity and memory. She petrifies the void, negative space, not built, the in-between things, evoking emotionally memory and the desire of his infinitude. This intention of the artist brings a fresh materiality vision to the Architecture. She embodies the architectural impalpable, by which an architect struggle all his life. It is this perception of the architectural impalpable that is wanted in this dissertation. Which brings new energy to their understanding.
