Abstract: The Fundamental Rights Agency’s report states that transgender people are amongst the social minorities who experience the most abuse and prejudice. In Portugal, research projects and research centers dedicated to LGBT studies are scarce. Thus, promoting research and interdisciplinary studies on this matter is a priority, since these are essential for its understanding and for the fight against gender inequality. This study – composed by a sample of 528 students from the Portuguese higher academic setting - aims to provide insight to the attitudes of cisgender individuals towards transgender people, based on three concepts: transphobia, genderism and gender-bashing. The questionnaire is based on the Gender and Transphobia Scale (GTS), developed by Hill and Willoughby (2005), whose reliability has been verified by various studies (Winter et al., 2008, 2009; Costa et al., 2010; Willoughby et al., 2010; Costa e Davies, 2012; Riggs et al. 2012). The results show that, in general, students don’t demonstrate high levels of transphobia or genderism, while the levels are even lower concerning violent attitudes against people whose gender expression/identity is not in conformity with the traditional binarism. Notwithstanding, when dividing the samples into categories, attitudes by individuals who identify themselves as men stand out as more negative. Holding religious beliefs and/or not being familiar with transgender individuals are also categories associated with higher levels of discrimination. On the other hand, people with a sexual orientation different from heterosexuality and/or with left wing political affiliations have a more positive outlook. Overall, GTS seems to be a reliable way to access the attitudes concerning transgender people. It needs to be applied in less educated populations decentralized from the great urban centers, being necessary to perceive how gender shapes people’s lives.
