This paper draws from the analysis of an “encounter” between a refugee woman in Portugal, a psychiatrist and an anthropologist, in the context of a transcultural consultation for migrants. Facing the silences and silencing observed among the psychiatrist and the patient, the goal is to reflect upon the contents of incommensurability in intercultural communication within contexts of domination. In this case, domination is found in the monologue of the hegemonic psychiatric knowledge imposed under the form of a medical diagnosis indifferent to the patient’s behavior. Consequently, domination is reflected in the silences of the refugee woman. Through the form of miscommunication and pre-oriented interpretation (the medical diagnosis), actually, such incommensurability reveal the historical background of power relations between individuals in asymmetric social positions (the doctor, the refugee, the anthropologist). By imagining a possible eventual dialogue, this paper proposes a non prescriptive alternative for intercultural communication through a self-reflective detour about the role of social scientists as architects of civic epistemologies: the experience of sharing life stories or biographical accounts as suggested by biographical research.por
