The current study has as a central objective to explore the social representations about intimate partner violence, as well as the chronicity and prevevance of the use of conflict resolution tactics. The protocol was applied to a total of 1185 subjects, and was constituted by a Sociodemographic and Complementary Dada Survey, the Portuguese version (Alexandra e Figueiredo, 2006) of The Revised Conflict Tactics (CTS-2), by Murray Straus (1996), the Conjugal Violence Questionnaire - Stories (QRVS-HIS) and the Conjugal Violence Questionnaire - Causes, Maintenance and Resolutions (QVC – CMR), both by Alarcão, Alberto, Correia e Camelo (2007). The results sugest a low legitimation of violent behaviour, with the tendency for man to legitimize more the use of such behaviours. No differences were found related to the causes of IVP, however differences were found relating to maintenance and resolution of IVP, which tend to vary acoording to the area of study, and woman tending to show higher scores. Regarding conflict resolution tactics, negotiation is the most used tactic, tending to be used at higher rated by sutdents than professionals. Although negotiation is the most used tactic, and is indeed used by almost all the subjects in a relationship, the use of violence tactis shows high scores. This data might be usefull in the future understanding of IVP.
