Turismo Cultural e Desenvolvimento. A Rota das Catedrais e o Caso de Santarém

Abstract

Este trabalho insere se no debate teórico sobre a importância do turismo cultural para o desenvolvimento dos territórios e das suas populações. Nele são discutidos os conceitos de turismo, cultura, património, rota, itinerário e geossímbolo, através do estudo de autores com trabalhos relevantes na área, da consulta de dados e decisões de entidades internacionais como a Organização Mundial do Turimo, e nacionais, como o Turismo de Portugal e o Instituto Nacional de Estatística, entre outros. O estudo de caso tem como objetivo caracterizar a cidade de Santarém enquanto destino turístico, o tipo de turista/visitante, o conhecimento da cidade por parte de quem a visita, o conhecimento da existência da Rota das Catedrais, o facto de Santarém fazer parte dessa Rota e de possuir um novo museu bem como a sua contribuição para o desenvolvimento do turismo cultural no território. Em termos das técnicas e dos instrumentos para recolha e análise dos dados, privilegiou-se o inquérito por questionário, com respostas fechadas e abertas dirigidas aos visitantes/turistas dos locais e monumentos mais visitados na cidade de Santarém. Foi ainda utilizado o inquérito por entrevista, na forma escrita, dirigido às personalidades envolvidas na criação da Rota das Catedrais e às Intituições responsáveis pela sua implementação, gestão e divulgação. Em termos gerais, o presente estudo permitiu concluir que o turismo, em geral, e o turismo cultural, em particular, são fatores de recuperação e investimento no património (material, imaterial e natural), contribuindo para o desenvolvimento dos territórios e das suas populações, mesmo em situações de crise provocadas por epidemias, catástrofes naturais ou conflitos entre países. No entanto, há sempre que ter em consideração que o turismo pode também contribuir para a desertificação e desterritorialização dos lugares, caso não seja planeado e sustentado. Da análise particular do estudo de caso efetuado, tendo por base os dados recolhidos pelos inquéritos, não é possível concluir, à presente data, que a Rota das Catedrais e a cidade de Santarém, inspiradoras do presente estudo, beneficiem do desenvolvimento económico, cultural e social atrás referido.

The present research study was developped within the theoretical debate on the importance of Cultural Tourism for the development of the territories and their populations. The concepts of tourism, patrimony, route, itinerary, and geosymbol are addressed going over relevant works in the areas above, data and decisions taken by international institutions such as the World Tourism Organization, and the National Tourism of Portugal and the National Institution of Statistics, among others. The case study chosen aimed at characterising the Town of Santarem as a touristic destination, the type of tourist/visitor, the knowledge of the town held by those who visit it, the knowledge of the existence of the Cathedrals’ Route, the fact that Santarem is part of that route, Santarem Museum which contributes to the development of the cultural tourism of the surrounding territory. As far as the techniques and instruments used for data collection and analysis a questionnaire with open and close items was developped and given to the visitors/tourists of the more visited places and monuments of Santarem. A written interview was applied to the individualities engaged in the creation of the Cathedrals’ Route and to the Institutions responsible for the implementation, management and diffusion of the information. In general terms, the present study allowed to reach some conclusions such as: tourism and cultural tourism are facts which contribute to patrimonial investment and restoration (material, immaterial and natural), while promoting the development of the territory and its population, even in crisis situations provoked by epidemies, natural calamities/catastrophes or conflicts between or among countries. Nevertheless we must have into consideration that tourism may contribute to forsaken and arid zones, if not well planned and properly sustained. From the analysis conducted on the collected data it is not possible to conclude, at least at this moment, that the Cathedrals’ Route and the town of Santarem, which inspired this research study, have got any economic, cultural or social development referred above.
