The present Master thesis explores the concept of tectonics in the contemporary architectural practice examining the foundations that underlie its meaning. Tectonics is a word that is hardly associated with only one definition, and it can be understood, in a broad sense, as encompassing the technical aspects of the architectural object and its artistic representation. When a possible conflict between the technique and the artistic values occurs, tectonics is relocated in the discourse by the difficulty of architecture in providing an authentic experience whose ontological character or representative character is not diminished. The argument that lies herein is that architecture acquires artistic significance from the expression of intrinsic subjects to the building itself and not from a priori established subjective values that transcend its material condition. This is shown through the analysis of the variations of the tectonics (form) that were developed “in a modern sense” from the nineteenth century on, through the (archi)tectonics legacy of Friedrich Schinkel, Karl Bötticher e Gottfried Semper. Since then, the course of tectonics has acquired variations, being impressively revisited in the second half of the twentieth century by theoreticians such as Eduard Sekler and Kenneth Frampton. The analysis of the evolution of the meaning of tectonics since its etymology to the founding interpretations, allows us to understand the way tectonics becomes a structural means in the process of architectural creation. In order to corroborate this, we study its true expression in Swiss-German architecture in the late twentieth century, an architecture that brings back a balanced language between construction and symbolism. This acknowledgement makes us aware of the importance of tectonic principles as far as present-day architectural practice is concerned, exposing architecture to a discourse that seeks, in the objectivity of technique, its artistic representation.
