Abstract: Arquitectura aprende-se viajando, conhecendo e vivendo o mundo.
Architecture is learnt by travelling, knowing and living the world. Architecture is lived by building, integrating the architect and his/her work in the city. The School of Architecture and Design, in Chile, introduces a radical pedagogy, given that it has a very specific poetic sensitivity. One of the features of this singular School is the experience of its “Travesías” (crossing), architectonic poetic journeys, throughout Latin America, which allow the student to materialize all the School’s ideals, in an experience that shares life, work and study. This Thesis intends to introduce the School’s experimental teaching method, which understands architecture from the poetic act, giving special highlight to the journeys undertaken since they summarize the School’s pedagogy from a real and practical point of view. They look into the student’s perception of architecture as a dominant cultural activity. Ideologically, an analysis will be done on how these trips contribute in a practical and theoretical sense for the construction of this idea of School, searching for the pedagogic specificity of this experience, which becomes method here. To sum up, the thesis pretends to study the correlation between “Travesías” and the broad concept of Valparaíso School; the correspondence between the different views of this instrumental practice and the way the students’ design will be established, showing the value of their Works. In a larger and personal extension, the influence of this experience on life itself will be investigated as well, as a student, as an architect, as a person, unfolding the value of the discovery from a Journey in Architecture.
