Emotions are essential in the human and organizational aspects of our lives since they play a role in regulating behavior and the way in which we interact with each other. This is particularly important in professions which involve coming into contact with the general public, as is the case with healthcare professionals. These professionals deal with situations which wear them out, both physically and psychologically, on a daily basis. This in turn, can trigger emotional and physical exhaustion as well as professional inefficiency, which may result in Burnout. The aim of this study is to assess whether formal healthcare providers of the elderly in institutions suffer from exhaustion, with a view to identifying the challenges they face whilst they are doing their jobs. The study was carried out with 79 participants who work in institutions in the city of Coimbra which provide support for the elderly, and is a quantitative study which is descriptive in nature. The results pertaining to the age and type of healthcare provider were the factors which proved to have the greatest impact on their feelings of self-fulfilment. The length of time they have been doing their job, their age and the type of healthcare provider are the predominant variables in situations of depersonalization. The findings appear to indicate that the emotional experiences and self-fulfilment of the healthcare providers, as well as the depersonalization they feel, stem from factors which are intrinsic and extrinsic to the healthcare professional, who face huge psychological demands due to the highly emotional nature and the specificity of their work. |
